About DMV Locations

In Michigan, driver's licenses, state identification cards, and vehicle services, such as titling and registration, are managed by the Secretary of State (SOS). You can visit an SOS branch office for these services. The SOS also has locations with special services, such as instant titles and even some self-service stations. Most branch locations are open on Wednesdays from 11am to 7pm and all other weekdays from 9am to 5pm. Some areas have smaller offices that close for lunch and some have SUPER!Centers that are open on Saturdays. Check with your local branch for its specific hours and services before you visit.

You can register a new vehicle or renew an existing registration at most SOS branch offices. You can also apply for a new title or transfer the title on a vehicle. Titling must be done within 15 days of purchase. Motor vehicles, trailers over 2,500 pounds, trailer coaches, off-road vehicles, pickup campers, and motorized watercraft over 20 feet are all required to be titled in Michigan.

You can apply for a driver's license through an SOS branch office. There are several types of licenses, including a standard license, a chauffeur's license, a commercial driver's license, or an enhanced license. Your license is valid for up to four years and expires on your birthday. For each type of license, there are eligibility, identification, and testing requirements. A standard license also requires a probationary period. Other types of licenses may require additional information and endorsements. Teen drivers must go through a graduated driver license (GDL) program. The GDL program has three levels, and each one increases the driver's privileges. Level one is a supervised learner's license, level two is an intermediate license with some limitations on passengers and nighttime driving, and level three is a full-privilege license that can be obtained at the age of 17.
